Best Time to Visit New Zealand for Hiking: A Season-by-Season Guide

Timing is everything when it comes to hiking in New Zealand. The country's dramatic alpine terrain, unpredictable weather, and incredible seasonal variation mean that the experience you have on the trail can differ enormously depending on when you go. Whether you're planning a solo adventure or joining one of our Ultimate Hikes New Zealand guided departures through PAST Outdoors Experiences, this season-by-season guide will help you choose the perfect window for your trip.

Plan your perfect New Zealand adventure — when to go, what to expect, and how to make the most of every season

Summer (December–February): Peak season pros and cons

Summer is New Zealand's most popular hiking season — and it's easy to see why. Long daylight hours, warmer temperatures, and generally more stable weather conditions make December through February the most accessible time to tackle the country's iconic trails. Snow has retreated from most alpine routes, river levels are typically lower and safer to cross, and the full network of Department of Conservation huts and Great Walks is open and operational.

The trade-off is popularity. New Zealand's most celebrated trails — the Milford Track, the Routeburn, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — attract significant numbers of hikers over summer, and the sense of solitude that makes backcountry hiking so special can be harder to find. Booking well in advance is essential, and hut accommodation on the Great Walks fills up fast. For those joining a guided experience, our small group approach helps to preserve that wilderness feeling even during the peak season.

Autumn (March–May): The sweet spot for guided hikes

If we had to pick one season to recommend above all others, it would be autumn. March through May delivers some of New Zealand's most spectacular hiking conditions — stable weather, dramatically reduced crowds, and the stunning visual spectacle of the South Island's beech forests turning golden and red as the season shifts.

Temperatures remain mild enough for comfortable hiking well into May, river levels are generally manageable, and the trails feel genuinely quiet in a way that summer simply can't offer. For our Ultimate Hikes New Zealand departures, autumn represents the sweet spot — ideal conditions, beautiful scenery, and the kind of peaceful backcountry experience that stays with you long after you've returned home. Winter (June–August): Alpine trails and snow conditions

Winter hiking in New Zealand is a serious undertaking — but for experienced and well-equipped adventurers, it offers a profoundly different and deeply rewarding experience. Snow covers the higher alpine routes from June onwards, and many backcountry trails require crampons, ice axes, and advanced navigation skills in winter conditions.

That said, New Zealand's lower altitude trails and coastal routes remain accessible and beautiful throughout winter, and the combination of crisp clear days, dramatic snowcapped peaks, and near-empty trails has its own undeniable appeal. If you're considering a winter adventure, preparation and experience are non-negotiable. Our guide on packing ideas for a multi-day mountain hike is a great starting point for building a winter-ready kit.

Spring (September–November): Wildflowers and fewer crowds

Spring is one of New Zealand's most underrated hiking seasons. As the snow begins to retreat from the alpine zones and the trails come back to life, September through November offers a wonderful window of opportunity for hikers who want great conditions without the summer crowds.

Wildflowers carpet the subalpine zones, waterfalls run full and dramatic from the winter snowmelt, and the days grow longer with every passing week. River crossings can be more challenging in early spring due to snowmelt, so river-crossing experience and good judgment are important. By November, conditions on most South Island routes are excellent — and the trails are noticeably quieter than they will be come December.
