Beginning in Christchurch with an evening briefing and group dinner, the traverse heads north to Lake Rotoroa, where a water taxi crosses into the Sabine Valley for the first night of backcountry camping. Days two and three push deeper into the wilderness — up through red beech forest and alpine terrain to the internationally renowned Blue Lake, set in a dramatic cirque below the Main Divide.

Day four is the crux of the trip: a demanding crossing of Moss Pass with panoramic Southern Alps views, descending into the remote D'Urville headwaters to Morgan Hut. The final full walking day follows the D'Urville River downstream at a more relaxed pace to D'Urville Hut, before a morning boat transfer on day six returns the group to Lake Rotoroa for the drive south, ending with a farewell dinner in Christchurch and airport transfers on day seven.

The Sabine, Moss Pass and D’Urville Traverse is a true wilderness journey through the remote interior of Nelson Lakes National Park. Combining water taxi access, expansive alpine valleys, crystal-clear rivers, and isolated mountain passes, this trip showcases some of the South Island’s most iconic backcountry terrain.

From the beech forests surrounding Lake Rotoroa to the alpine basin of Blue Lake — renowned for having some of the clearest freshwater in the world — the route passes through landscapes that feel increasingly remote with every day travelled.

This trip is physically demanding and suited to hikers seeking a genuine multi-day wilderness experience away from crowded tracks and developed infrastructure.

Perfect for traveling

I bought one for me & one for my twin for our upcoming Euro summer holiday. The colours are gorgeous so we decided on 2 different colours instead of twinning it, berry fade for me & sea moss for her. The travel blanket is nice & light and the perfect size to take on board budget no frills plane rides. We'll also be doing some camping & thought it would be great for that too in case we get any cool nights. I'm sure we'll find many practical uses for the Rumpl Travel Puffy Blanket!
