In 1975, a young engineer named Tim Leatherman was touring Europe and the Middle East with his wife in a secondhand Fiat that broke down constantly, and staying in hotels with plumbing that failed just as often. Armed with only a basic pocketknife, he kept wishing for a genuine pair of pliers he could actually carry with him. In a Tehran hotel room, he sketched the idea that would become the Pocket Survival Tool, the first pliers-based multi-tool ever made.
It took eight years of rejection before Tim, together with business partner Steve Berliner, launched the PST in 1983 out of Portland, Oregon. Every Leatherman tool is still designed and built in that same Portland factory today, backed by a 25-year warranty that reflects genuine confidence in how long these tools are built to last.
