What is a Gun Licence NSW?
In New South Wales, you must hold a valid firearms licence to possess or use a firearm lawfully. Licences are issued by the NSW Police Force’s Firearms Registry and managed through Service NSW. They’re typically valid for two or five years and require you to demonstrate you are a fit and proper person with an acceptable genuine reason for possessing firearms.
Steps to apply for a Gun Licence NSW
1. Check eligibility
To begin, you must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of NSW. You must also be able to justify a genuine reason for owning or using firearms — common reasons include sport/target shooting, recreational hunting or vermin control.
2. Complete firearms safety training
Before applying you must complete a recognised gun license Firearms Safety Training Course — this forms a mandatory part of your application and equips you with essential skills and knowledge.
Our 3-hour Firearms Safety Training course provides the essential skills, knowledge and recognised certification needed to apply for a NSW firearms licence for Category A (Target Shooting) and Category B (Hunting).
All participants are required to join the Australian Recreation Union (ARU) to ensure they are covered by insurance for the duration of the training. Membership applications will be supplied on the day with a cost of $30, payable directly to the ARU.
3. Prepare documentation
You’ll need proof of identity, your firearms safety certificate and documentation supporting your genuine reason. You will need to create or log into your MyServiceNSW account ready to submit your application.
4. Submit your application
Head to the NSW Police Force Community Portal via Service NSW and lodge your online application. If approved, you’ll receive a notification and instructions to have your photo taken for your licence card.
Gun Licence Renewal
Once your licence term is nearing its end, you must apply for gun licence renewal through the Service NSW portal. It’s important to renew before expiry to avoid lapses that can complicate your ability to shoot or acquire permits. The renewal process also asks for updated genuine reason and storage information.
Understanding Gun Licence Classes
Gun license classes refer to the different categories of firearms you may be qualified to use — for example, longarms, pistols or specialised tools. Choosing the right class early means your training and safety course aligns with what you plan to shoot, which makes the application smoother.
