Bedrock Sandals Gear Review - Mountain Clogs

Cool or Tool? We sent a pair Bedrock Mountain Clogs to Adventure Dad, Josh, to see what he thought.

Article written by Josh Fletcher

I’ve worked in the outdoor industry for close to 20 years, so I’m always on the lookout for new and innovative gear. Bedrock Sandals have been on my radar for a while, but only recently have they been available in Australia. Choosing to work with specialist retailers such as PAST Outdoors.

I’ve always been a function over fashion guy. Which hasn’t helped my cool factor. Except for when the Corp-core scene took off overnight, skyrocketing my cool level from smouldering campfire to Tassie ocean swimming in winter.

Add to this I recently turned 40, so my function over fashion scale has been even more skewed away from fashion.

I’m also a Dad of a very active two year old boy so I’m always on the lookout for gear that is simple, functional and has a range of use. And that can keep up with him.

That’s why the Bedrock Mountain Clog caught my eye.

From the moment you get the box the attention to detail is noticeable.

A reflection of the lifestyle this brand represents, the box and other packaging is fun and informative, giving you an insight into the brand as well as everything you need to know about fitting and sizing your clogs.

With the box now in the recycling it’s onto the clogs themself. Wow is all I can say.

I’ve worked for brands that produce some of the highest quality outdoor footwear on the market and I can honestly say that the quality and workmanship in the Bedrocks is up there with them. Maybe even better than some.

A Bedrock Mountain Clog placed on its side on top of a wooden post, with its Vibram Megagrip Sole facing the camera

From the integration between the high quality Vibram sole and rubber toe cap, to the burly but not over the top stitched webbing. To the perfect thickness of suede leather used in the upper. You can see that some solid R&D has gone into this product, resulting in a primo looking pair of clogs.

This leads us to the design.

The layout of the Mountain Clog is, in my opinion, pretty unique.

As outlined in the packaging, there is a Bedrock three point adjustment system that you can use to fine tune the fit of your clogs.

Two (one on the upper inside and one on the heel) use a daisy chain type webbing strap that allows you to adjust then lock in your fit with a small G-hook buckle.

The third is a ladderlock buckle that gives easy one hand adjustment. Perfect for tightening your fit, once you’ve slipped your clogs on.

So how do they feel?

As Bedrock shows in their catchy product video this Clog is all about camp vibe type adventures.

So they’ve given the clogs a super generous and relaxed fit. The toe box is roomy, meaning it works great both with and without socks, and the generous heel zone allows for comfortable wear, strapped up or worn as a slip-on.

I’m based in Queensland so I haven’t yet rocked socks with these, but without socks the footbed is firm, yet comfortable. Giving more support than a bunch of alternative adventure sandals on the market.

For how much you’re getting in this product, the weight is not excessive. Compared to a traditional adventure sandal it’s slightly heavier. But if you compare it to a fully closed approach shoe, then it’s light.

I’m all about having a shoe that can handle a range of terrain and surfaces. And the Vibram sole equipped Clog does this with no worries. From gravel carparks on the bike, to polished concrete skateparks chasing my son around, to wet grass, to steep and offset rocky walking tracks. The clog felt at home. To a point where I felt pretty safe tackling pretty much any surface. Which is something I sadly don’t do in the current adventure sandals I’ve been rocking.

I’m a self confessed gear nerd and could go on for hours about how capable and worthy these shoes are. But I know you’re hanging in there as is, so I’ll cut to the chase.

Are the Bedrock Mountain Clogs cool or tool?

To me a tool is someone who goes into a situation ill prepared, resulting in them making a tool of themself. This won’t happen if you’re wearing the Mountain Clogs.
Cool is also something that has been designed and built well while also standing out. Along the lines of “Ohhhh what are they? They are coooollll!”. So taking these two factors into consideration I’m calling the Bedrock Mountain Clogs C.O.O.L!

Full disclaimer, the team at PAST were kind enough to throw me a pair, so I could give them a real world whirl, which I’m sharing in this review.
I used the innovative online sizing chart to get my size right and went with the suede leather option as it has a mesh lining.
