Tails from the Trail: PAST Outdoors New Zealand hike September 2026
September brought a fantastic turnout for our latest hike in New Zealand, with a great crew of keen hikers joining us for several days deep in the South Island backcountry. It was challenging, it was cold in the mornings, and the vibes were awesome from start to finish. Best of all, Dave, Seth & Hamish guided the cohort, keeping them safe, motivated and smiling (as much as possible) through the journey. Read on to learn about the 4 day hike and how you can join our next one!
Our ultimate hike New Zealand adventure: September 2026
A challenging hike New Zealand style
This isn't a stroll on a groomed track. Our Elite Hikes New Zealand program takes you through remote valleys, beech forest and alpine terrain, carrying a multi-day pack and staying in historic backcountry huts. As one of our hikers put it:
"The hike was one of the most challenging things I've done, but it was also one of the most rewarding and memorable experiences." – Deb, September 2026 Cohort
Led by guides who've been there

Our guides bring years of experience from special forces and policing, which means sound decisions on weather, river crossings and route changes. That experience showed every day on the trail.
"Dave and Seth, thank you for your leadership, encouragement and patience, your experience and support were greatly appreciated." – Deb
Gearing up for the trail
Good gear makes a tough day far more enjoyable. Before you go, read our guide to packing for a multi-day mountain hike, and find out why we swear by Bridgedale hiking socks for New Zealand trekking.
"Thank you all for the memories, the laughs, the support, and for sharing such an amazing adventure with us." – Deb, September 2026 Cohort
Join our next ultimate hike New Zealand trip
Our next departure is the 5-day guided South Island hike, running 17–23 February 2027 through Nelson Lakes National Park. We'll cross Lake Rotoroa by water taxi, visit the crystal-clear Blue Lake and tackle the Moss Pass crossing, with all meals and accommodation included for $2,499. Prefer something shorter? Our 3-day South Island hike runs in May 2027. Download the Elite Hikes New Zealand brochure for the full details.

"It's an experience I'll never forget, and I feel very lucky to have shared it with such a wonderful group of people." – Deb, September 2026 Cohort
How fit do I need to be for the February 2027 hike?
The 5-day Nelson Lakes traverse is rated difficult and isn't suited to beginners. Expect walking days of 3–8 hours, steep and uneven terrain, river crossings and carrying a multi-day pack. If you'd like something a little shorter, our 3-day South Island hike in May 2027 is a great option.
What's included in the price?
All accommodation and meals are included, along with expert guiding, road transfers between Christchurch and Lake Rotoroa, and water taxis on the lake. Flights to and from Christchurch aren't included.
Do I need to bring my own hiking gear?
We'll send you a full kit list before the trip, and some gear hire is available. Anything you're missing you can pick up from our online store or in store at Helensburgh, and our team is happy to help you choose.
When should I book my flights?
Plan to arrive in Christchurch after 12pm on 17 February and fly out on 23 February. Please don't book flights out on the 22nd, as we keep a weather hold-over day in case conditions change our plans.
