Trail Running Vests & Hydration Vests Australia | PAST Outdoors

Trail running vests and hydration for Australian trails

A hydration vest is the one piece of trail running gear that can ruin a race if you get it wrong. Too loose and it bounces. Too small and your mandatory gear will not fit. Too much capacity and you carry weight you never use. What you actually want is a vest that disappears once you start moving, with your flasks up front where you can reach them without breaking stride.

This collection covers running hydration vests and the soft flasks that go in them, chosen for the terrain we run ourselves. Our shop sits in Helensburgh at the top of the Illawarra escarpment, so the gear here has been tested on loose sandstone, root-strewn singletrack and long clifftop climbs, not just read about in a catalogue.

Choosing a trail running vest

Start with fit rather than litres. A vest should sit snug across the chest without restricting your breathing, and it should not shift when you run downhill. Look for bounce-free front flask pockets, pockets you can reach while moving, and enough organised storage that your compression bandage, space blanket, phone and food each have a home you can find without stopping.

Capacity comes second. Most Australian trail races with a mandatory gear list need somewhere between 5L and 10L. A 10L vest is more than a 19km race demands, but it is the size you grow into rather than replace when you step up to 30km and beyond.

What we stock

The Osprey Duro Pro 10 and the women's specific Osprey Dyna Pro 10 are both 10L race vests developed with elite athletes. Each ships with two 500mL soft flasks, so your mandatory litre of water is covered out of the box, and both include a removable quiver for trekking poles. The Dyna harness is built for shorter, narrower and curved body types rather than being a men's vest in a different colour.

We also stock collapsible soft flasks as spares or replacements, so you can carry more water on hot days without adding a bladder.

Not sure what a race will require of you? Our guide to the Illawarra Escarpment Traverse walks through a real mandatory gear list and what we would add to it. For shoes, socks and the rest of the kit, see the full trail running collection.

Fit matters more here than any spec sheet. Come into the store in Helensburgh and we will load a vest up and let you run around the block in it, or order online and we will help you get the size right.
