4wd Water Filter

Emergency water filter kit for Australian homes and 4WDs

Caravan Water filtration Station

Floods, storms, bushfires and long outback drives all have one thing in common: when something goes wrong, you need safe drinking water. An emergency water filter Australia households and 4WD travellers can rely on doesn't need to be complicated, but it does need to be in the cupboard or the vehicle before you need it. This guide explains what to pack, how the pieces fit together and which products we recommend.

Why you need an emergency water filter

Power outages, damaged pipes and flooding can make tap water unreliable or unsafe, and on remote 4WD tracks you may be days from the nearest tank or town. A good water filter turns creek, tank or stored water into something you can drink, and it takes up very little room. Follow your local emergency services' advice on how much water to store.

What goes in an emergency water kit

  • A main filter. A gravity system that does the work without power.
  • A backup method. Purification tablets or drops, which are light and last for years.
  • Containers. Clean bottles or bladders to filter into and store water.
  • Spare parts and instructions. A cleaning tool, spare filter if available and a printed copy of the manual.

1. LifeStraw Peak Gravity 8L: our pick for homes and 4WDs

LifeStraw Gravity Water Filter

The LifeStraw Peak Large Capacity Gravity Water Filter System 8L is built for exactly this job. It's a portable water filter that holds 8 litres, with a membrane microfilter rated for up to 2,000 L. It's listed as removing 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites and 99.999% of microplastics, silt, sand and cloudiness, and it meets US EPA and NSF P231 standards for bacteria and parasite removal.

  • Weight and build: 536 g, made from double TPU-laminated nylon, with a 1.2 m hose.
  • In the kit: hose and quick connector, carabiner, storage cap, carry strap and a backwash accessory.
  • Use: hang it from a hook, tree or roof rack and let gravity do the work. It also works as a storage bag or a straw.

2. Sawyer Gravity: the budget-friendly backup

Caravan Water Filter

The Sawyer One Gallon Gravity Filtration System uses a Sawyer MINI filter rated to 0.1 micron, with a 1-gallon bladder. You fill the bladder, hang it up and let the water flow through, with no pumping or power needed. The kit includes a cleaning plunger, a cleaning coupling and a gravity hose with adapters, and the MINI accepts a push-pull cap so you can turn the flow on and off.

It's smaller than the LifeStraw, which makes it a handy second filter for a glovebox or a household emergency box. Read our Sawyer Mini vs Micro Squeeze vs Squeeze guide to see how the range compares.

3. Katadyn Micropur Forte: purification backup

Water Purification liquid

Filters don't list virus removal on their product pages, so we recommend pairing one with a purification product. The Katadyn Micropur Forte Liquid comes in a 100 ml bottle and uses silver ions to preserve treated water for up to 6 months. The page describes it as suited to clear water and to caravans, boats and camper trailers, and says to combine it with a filter for murky water. The Forte Liquid is currently listed as coming soon, so you can ask to be notified when it's back.

Water Purification tablets

In the meantime, theย Katadyn Micropur Forte tablets do the same job. A pack has 100 tablets, each treating one litre, with a listed 30 minute contact time for bacteria and viruses, 120 minutes for Giardia and a 5 year shelf life. Always follow the instructions on the pack.

Home kit vs 4WD kit

The right emergency water filter Australia wide depends on where you keep it:

  • Home: keep the LifeStraw Peak 8L and a pack of tablets together in an emergency box with your torch and first aid kit.
  • 4WD: carry the 8L system and a spare Sawyer, since you may be filtering for several people from tanks, dams or creeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best emergency water filter Australia has for homes? +

For homes and 4WDs, we recommend the LifeStraw Peak Gravity 8L. It holds 8 litres and needs no power, with a filter rated up to 2,000 L. The Sawyer Gravity is a lower-cost backup.

What is the best portable water filter for a 4WD? +

A gravity filter like the LifeStraw Peak 8L suits 4WD trips because you can hang it from the vehicle and filter for several people at once. Pair it with purification tablets for backup.

Does a water filter remove viruses? +

Viruses aren't listed on the product pages for the Sawyer Gravity or LifeStraw Peak Gravity systems. Micropur Forte tablets list a 30 minute contact time for viruses, so we suggest carrying both.

How long does Micropur Forte last? +

Micropur Forte tablets have a listed shelf life of 5 years, and silver ions preserve treated water for up to 6 months. Always follow the instructions on the pack.

Can I use a filter with murky or muddy water? +

Filters remove silt, sand and cloudiness, and the LifeStraw Peak comes with a backwash accessory. Purification products work best on clear water, so filter murky water first.
