iksplor Adventure BBQ: a portable BBQ that fits in a backpack

Most portable BBQs are portable in the way a car battery is portable. The iksplor Adventure BBQ is different: the whole cooker breaks down into a padded backpack you can carry to the campsite, the beach, the trailhead car park or the far end of the paddock, then set up in a couple of minutes.

The full kit weighs around 12kg with the cook plate in the pack. Carry the 4kg cook plate separately and the backpack drops to roughly 8kg, which is the difference between a two-person carry and a one-person carry over rough ground.

Why it works where other camping BBQs do not

• Adjustable height, 470mm to 1095mm. Three aluminium legs with lock mechanisms mean you can cook standing at a comfortable height, or drop it low to sit around. It also means you can get it level on ground that is anything but.
• 455mm pre-seasoned carbon steel cook plate. Big enough to feed a group, and it improves with use the way a good pan does.
• 12,200 BTU single burner. Real heat, with an adjustable valve, not a token flame that takes twenty minutes to warm up.
• Modular. Baseplate, legs, brackets, plate and burner all pack down and go back together without tools.
• Purpose-built backpack. Internal foam inserts, gas bottle side pockets, heavy-duty zips and removable straps.

What you need to know before you buy

Gas is not included. The burner and adaptor supplied are best suited to a 468g propane gas bottle, which is a standard, widely available size. Pick one up with the BBQ or grab them locally as you travel.

The cook plate is carbon steel, so treat it like cast iron. No detergent, no soap. Scrape the plate down, clean with warm water and a non-metallic scrubber, dry it, then wipe on a thin layer of oil. Done properly, the seasoning builds and the plate gets better every trip.

Check fire restrictions. Gas BBQ rules change during total fire bans and vary by state, so check the current fire danger rating and local rules before you cook.
